Effect: Impair one enemy for 1 turn. This character gains +35% AP.
Effect: If this specialist attack an enemy that has 90% of their adrenaline bar filled or more, the enemy is impaired for 1 turn.
3rd Slot Effect: When being attacked, a better chance to Impair the attacker for 3 turns.
Kal is a quintessential Support and a master of Impair. Kal’s entire kit design focuses on Impairing the enemy team aggressively, preventing them from gaining AP and/or using their Rush. Let’s breakdown his kit:
Kal’s Rush is a multi-target Impair that he can leverage quickly at a 66 AP cost. With an early aggression against the enemy’s ability to generate AP, you can gain an early advantage against the enemy team by being able to create a bigger delay between when your team Rush’s vs. the enemy team. Additionally, Kal drains -20 AP from the enemies affected by his Rush, creating a further gap between Rush times by setting them back a turn.
A great way to single out a particular enemy to be Impaired. Useful in a bind when you are trying to suppress a particular character’s AP generation. Plus Kal gains +35% AP, allowing you to use the Active more freely without penalty.
If you suspect or know that an enemy may Rush soon, Neutralize will be an easy way to ensure that they don’t Rush within the next few turns. It’s a simple but effective skill to leverage at opportune moments.
If you run into Kal on a defending team, odds are you are going to want to take him down quickly. However, Kal’s weapon comes with a nasty bite, potentially locking out an enemy’s Rush and AP generation capabilities by Impairing Kal’s attacker for 3 turns. A great deterrent for attackers who are expecting to Rush aggressively.
In short, Kal has the ability to really shut down an enemy team when used effectively. Even with Impair Resist mods, Kal’s frequency in being able to Impair makes it difficult for most enemies to not be affected by him, especially when you can guarantee AP loss as a result of his Rush. While he may be a simple a straightforward character, he’s one of the best characters in the game when it comes controlling an enemy team via Impair.
[6 Star] Synergistic Characters
Fast Lydia – If you plan to use Kal in a Fast + Tough team, Lydia is an ideal leader. With Lydia’s Leader Skill providing +40% HP and +40% DEF to all Fast and Tough teammates, she covers Kal’s weaknesses with him having lower defense stats. Lydia’s Rush and Active can also help keep Kal alive and help reduce the impact of Stun should Kal encounter it on the enemy team.
Tough Carl – Carl is a solid leader for Kal on an Offensive team. Carl’s leader skill provides Fast and Tough characters +40% ATK and a huge bonus to AP when attacking. Since Kal is all about Rush control and getting the first strike, Carl can be an excellent leader to getting Kal’s Rush off faster. Carl is also a great Medic that can keep Kal going or Revive him if he happens to be killed.
Strong Carl – With Kal being used on a Fast + Strong team (melee), a good leader choice would be Carl, who provides +40% HP and +40% DEF to all melee teammates. Carl’s Active Skill has the potential to provide Kal with an extra +20% AP, allowing Kal to get his Rush off faster than the enemy team, adding to the Rush gap via Impair. Carl’s Rush can also help keep Kal alive with regaining 50% of his HP.
Tough Michonne – Kal is prone to weapon effects that cause Stun, Confuse, etc. Having Michonne (or a Disarm character) present reduces the risk of Kal being debilitated from weapon effects for Kal’s Neutralize to trigger is incredibly helpful and reduces overall risk. Michonne also deals a large source of damage, which compliments Kal’s more supportive style.
Strong Shiva – Great synergy with Kal to combine Impair and Confuse against the enemy team. The stun Active Skill that Shiva has also helps with offsetting cooldowns between Shiva and Kal to have a stronger control loop. Additionally, Shiva has Cutthroat, allowing for Shiva to take advantage of targets Kal has Impaired as well to deal deal that extra +30% damage. This goes for any character that uses the Cutthroat Specialist Skill.
